'There was not much that was brought to our house that was not moved out of it again, rather sharpish. There was only one thing, in fact, that had come and got stuck . . .'

First published in 2003, Sarah's third novel, Fingersmith, opens in London, 1862. Sue Trinder, orphaned at birth, grows up among petty thieves — fingersmiths — under the rough but loving care of Mrs Sucksby and her 'family'. But from the moment she draws breath, Sue's fate is linked to that of another orphan growing up in a gloomy mansion not too many miles away.

Praise for Fingersmith:

'There are always novels that you envy people for not yet having read, for the pleasure they still have to come. Well, this is one. Long, dark, twisted and satisfying, it's a fabulous piece of writing . . . an unforgettable experience' Julie Myerson, Guardian

'Immaculately stylish and pleasurable … a glittering feat of imagination, complex as a spider’s web' Will Cohu, Daily Telegraph

'A wonderful melodrama' Alexandra Shulman, Observer

'A book which I absolutely could not put down' Erica Wagner, The Times
